This beautiful, old lidded basket from the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo
The Kuba are known for their exquisite raffia textiles, but handmade basketry is another area where they excel.
The top and bottom of this piece has four corners, which are a trademark. The carved wooden hook was used to anchor the basket in the grass roof of the hut. Such baskets were used to store foods, to serve meals, and many other uses.
This Kuba basket's lid opens and is hinged and secured to the basket on the side with the woven plant fiber rope which is also attached to the wooden hook.
This fine example measures 7 inches tall and 10.5 inches in diameter.
